I want to find out what genre does Magic Knight Rayearth fit in. Does it feel more mecha and iseaki than a standard magical girl anime?

All of them.
Or, better yet, whichever suits you. Genres aren't set in stone. They're simply guides to help you choose if a prospective title is worth your time. I watched the first season a few months back because it's been labelled a magical girl show. I'm not terribly interested in either mecha or isekai. When MKR first came out, the term isekai hadn't been coined yet. In fact, I added isekai as a "theme" in the ANN encyclopaedia after watching it. Perhaps you can add mecha as a theme? |

Though it's been roughly thirty years since I've seen it, I feel that MKR is predominantly an isekai and magical girl show. While there is mecha in it, it never really felt like a proper mecha anime to me.

I agree. The Knights are more magic than machine as I remember. The series also uses some D&D game elements while taking subtle digs at the genre.
